What a vibe check actually is
The phrase arrived as a joke. The habit underneath it is older than the slang, and more useful than it sounds.
A vibe check is a fast read of state. Yours, a room's, a conversation's. Everyone already runs them constantly, mostly without noticing: you walk into a meeting and know within a second whether to make the joke.
Why the informal version misses
Read on yourself, the informal version has a blind spot. You are the one thing you cannot stand outside of. Ask yourself how you are doing and you get a story, shaped by what you expect, what you want, and how tired you happen to be.
Running a deliberate one
- Pick one statement, not a mood. Say something concrete and first-person: this is the right call, I have capacity for this today.
- Notice the body before the argument. Settle or brace. That is all you are reading for.
- Write down nothing but the read. Interpretation is a separate step, and it belongs to you.
Aligned and unaligned, not right and wrong
A read is information about you at this moment, not a verdict on the statement. Unaligned can mean the plan is wrong. It can also mean the plan is fine and you are running on four hours of sleep. Both are worth knowing, and only you can tell which it is.
Doing it daily
One read on its own is a curiosity. Thirty reads is a pattern: which days, which topics, which people. SomaCheck exists to make each read take about three seconds so the pattern actually accumulates, using the motion sensors in the phone you are already carrying.
